The Music Teachers' Board

MTB Exams

MTB is an Ofqual-regulated exam board where every exam is recorded and submitted online. I use MTB when a student needs a more flexible, hybrid exam that mixes and matches elements to suit them.

Why I use MTB

MTB is ideal when a student needs something more flexible than a traditional board. We can mix and match the exam components, choose free-choice pieces the student actually loves, and record everything in a familiar room rather than an exam hall.

  • Fully Ofqual regulated, and Grades 6–8 carry the same UCAS points as any other board
  • Recorded at home or in the lesson with the MTB app — no exam-room nerves
  • Practical Grades: recital, technical work and musicianship, like a traditional grade
  • Performance Grades: a recital programme only, all playing
  • Free-choice pieces available at every grade, so we can build a programme around what a student loves
  • Technical and musicianship resources are free to download

How it works in practice

  1. 1We choose the pieces and technical work together, including any free-choice options.
  2. 2When the student is ready, we record the exam during a normal lesson using the MTB app.
  3. 3The recording is submitted online and marked by an MTB examiner — no travel, no waiting.
  4. 4Results and the certificate arrive by email, just like any other regulated board.
